For this assignment I was asked to create a concept bundle for the development of a new movie. The storyline I chose to base my movie on was 'The quest'. The concept bundle has to include at least three creatures or characters, the environment that these creatures would live in and at least five scene assets.
My film is set billions of years ago on an earth that pre-dates our own, an earth where magic rules supreme but no power rivals that of the orb of truth. He who controls the orb's power controls the earth's destiny; evil seeks out the orb to control the earth. There is an ancient race known as the Knights of Truth sworn by oath to protect the orb. Evil travels from all corners of the earth to try and obtain the orb's power. Many of the Knights have never even seen the orb because its power is said to corrupt even the purest of heart but they would still give their lives to keep the power out of reach from any being.
All is not well between the Knights however, one of the wisest and strongest nights grows weary of constant evil throughout the world and decides that evil can't be stopped, it must be controlled. He takes it upon himself to use the orb to control the earth and stop the struggle between good and evil by ruling everything himself. One young Knights apprentice takes it upon himself to once again place the orb under nobody's power and instead looked up and out of reach from everyone and everything. There are many interesting, even alien looking terrains on our planet, ranging from the hottest desserts to the coldest ice plains.
Obviously there is the occasional fantasy based surroundings to
spice things up a little and sometimes added features are needed to ensure
the plants survival in the created world it is living in.
the plants survival in the created world it is living in.
Film makers often use places such as these to portray other worldly, fantasy and alien settings.
Narnia:I want the Orb to be housed in a temple to represent the importance and sacredness of it and again there are some fantastic examples around the world.
As sacred as all of these temples look, I have licence to really exaggerate some things to make it look really revered. For example, it could be floating or glowing or something.
For the main 'good guy' I want him to be fully adapted to the jungle because I want the knights to be the most powerful creatures across all terrains but the main good guy's native place is the jungle so he would be the most suited to living and fighting in the trees.
Clearly this attempt is too human, he is stood up to strait so he would
struggle to keep balance up the trees. Also his arms are to stubby, he needs to have a much longer reach than this and the longer arms would help him to run faster when he needs to sprint.
This looks better but I need to bend his eyebrows and give him
some sort of clothing to indicate he is some sort of sorcerer, a cape for example.
The elder obviously has a better knowledge of magic so the main good guy may
need some weapons of some kind to aid him in battle.
Here is a rig I made using 3DS Max of my character.
I have attempted to animate my storyboard.
Like any good hero, our apprentice needs a vicious wild animal
that will only obey him. I like the idea of it being some sort of wild cat
mainly because I think it would be awesome to have a wild cat as a pet.
I think some sort of armour would be needed to be able to survive in the harsh surroundings.
Maybe not quite as much as this guy but it is the only good example I can find.
I only really want some kind of head armour. as It will have big teeth and though
it will be hairy like a jungle can it will have a tough lizard like underbelly.
With the main 'bad guy' being good initially I want him to give off a weird, I don't trust you feel. To try and portray this I want to give him creepy features so even if he was a 'good guy' you still wouldn't totally trust him.
A common occurrence in sorcerers seems to be hoods, big shoulder pads and long coats. however, though these guys look a little untrustworthy, this guy is a powerful sorcerer he would transform himself to be a little better suited to his surroundings. With the temple being in the middle of nature, I think it would be cool if he was centaur or something.
I like the idea of the bottom half of him to be spider or crab or anything that scurries because i know a lot of people, including my self, get freaked out by things like that so I think that something like that will give the desired off putting look i am looking for.
I have found quite a lot of examples of half horse but i am struggling to find much of anything else, I am going to do a few animation tests of a spider walking to give myself a clearer view of what it is i want him to look like.
Might try and draw him less evil and more weird just to
see if that gives off the desired creepy feel.
I'm going to go back to the classic hooded sorcerer look.
The dark mysterious look is what I'm really looking for to fit in better
with the whole concept of this character.
Here is what the rig I made for this guy looks like before I
place any animation onto it.
Here is what it looks like with animation.
Not good, I've tried changing the off set positioning and off set rotation etc but nothing I do seems to sort it out. I shall try again but I will change the design slightly.
Again the movement of this is far from what I have on my sketch pad
and in my head. Instead of trying to get it to look good strait away I am going to
concentrate on one set of legs at a time.
I obviously used the spider legs a little more directly on this one and the movement looks ok but it doesn't move like it is supposed to, the legs are bending all wrong according to my sketchings.
This is exactly how I want the character to walk and to reach this desired effect I simply had to add an extra bone to each of the legs so I could manipulate them to look and move right.
This is the finished rig for my character.
